31st Chesapeake Masters Championship Results
October 15th, 2012 10:31 pm by

With 45 Lasers, good wind and great help on the race committee and in the kitchen, we couldn’t have asked for a better weekend at the 31st Chesapeake Bay Laser Masters Championship.  John MacCausland from Cooper River Yacht Club came away the overall winner of the 7 race series.  John bested masters sailors in various age groups, all over the age of 35, hailing from MI, MA, NY, NJ, OH, PA, VA, NC, MD, and Washington DC.

Racing got off to a slow start on Saturday when the competitors drifted to the race course in a light northerly.  3 hours and a couple blown off starts later the wind finally settled in from the east at 6-8 knots allowing us to sail 3 races in the late afternoon.  John MacCausland, Gavin O’Hare (Eastport Yacht Club) and Mike Schmidt (Magothy River Sailing Association) all took bullets in Saturday’s races.

Off the water Saturday night chef Alain Vincey prepared Osso Buco for the sailors, race committee and guests.

Sunday’s racing saw far better conditions with the wind starting around 8 and building to 14 out of the south-south west. The long courses gave the sailors plenty of room to spread out make moves.  Sailing his way to the title John MacCausland picked up two more bullets while Gavin O’Hare got another and Bob Tan (Severn Sailing Association) added a bullet to his best 2nd place on Saturday.

2012 District 11 Championship Results
September 28th, 2012 1:01 pm by

Thirty-Three sailors had some great sailing conditions for the 2012 District 11 Championship at Severn Sailing Association in Annapolis.  Brady White (SSA) put up all top 5 finishes in 7 races to win the Standard fleet while Eric Reitinger’s (BBYC) consistent top finishes and an OCS by Carsten Faubel (CRYC) gave Eric the win in the Radial fleet.

Saturday’s saw 15-18 knots with large swells coming out of the South with the course positioned just north of Tolly Point.  As the weather system moved away overnight, the wind shifted to a much colder North wind for 3 more races on Saturday with a little less wind.

The top 5 boats in the Standard fleet definitely pulled away from the rest of the pack, but only 3 points separated 2nd through 5th position.  The final order after Brady White were Henry Filter (SSA), Eric Reinke (SSA), Luke Shingledecker (SSA) and Kyle Swenson (RTYC).

In the Radial fleet Carsten Faubel got out to a great start on day 1 putting up all 1st place finishes while Mike Schmidt (MRSA) and Eric Reitinger traded spots for 2nd and 3rd.  An OCS by Carsten on the 2nd race Sunday opened the door for Eric to seize the championship.

Thanks again to all of the folks at SSA for the great crab and chicken feast and for hosting our District Championship!

IMG_1418

We had a great turnout of 12 Lasers on Sunday for the Laser Fall Regatta.  The wind on the other hand didn’t turn out leaving us 5-8 knots for the 7 races.  Dan Herlihy won the day with 4 bullets and some pretty consistent sailing.  Some of the lightweight juniors in Standard rigs definitely took some shots at top finishes in the light-air.  Jake Spracher put up pretty consistent 2s and 3s to finish 2nd and Jon Deutsch was 3rd.  Top Juniors were Conrad Roos and Eric Roos.

Inaugural Corsica River Yacht Club Spring Regatta Results

2012 Corsica Annual Regatta Photo - by Kelly Snavely

We had a successful inaugural Corsica River Yacht Club Spring Regatta this past Sunday.  The only thing that did not work out as planned was the wind.  It was a beautiful, warm, sunny day but we had a steadily dying Easterly that after two races fighting the building thermal became too unstable to run a decent race.   Unlike the annual regatta where we race in the Chester, we ran this event in the Corsica itself going back to the roots of the club in the 1930’s.  The two races we were able to run were a nice 30 minute length windward/leeward course with the leeward mark in Middle Quarter Cove and the windward mark up near Ship Point giving us about a .75 NM windward leg.  Easterly is a strange, and luckily uncommon, breeze on the Corsica.  On Saturday night we also had the closest full moon to the earth of 2012 which created a decent current in the Corsica which in turn impacted people’s tactical decisions.  The Corsica rarely sees currents strong enough to significantly influence sailing.

We had great attendance with 14 sailors from six different clubs, 2 Laser Districts (10 and 11), and four states.  Mike Schmidt of MRSA and Jacques Kerrest of PRSA both sailed fast and alternated first and second in both races with Mike winning the tie-breaker to take the regatta.  Full results along with some great pictures (taken by a veritable paparazzi of photographers) will be posted soon on www.CRYC.org.

After the sailing everyone headed in for plenty of food and drinks and enjoyed a lovely Spring day.  Thank you very much to all who attended and supported our regatta.  The inaugural Spring Regatta exceeded my expectations thanks to your support and hopefully we can make this an annual event (so please put it on your calendar).  Thanks to the CRYC membership for putting on a great show with plenty of support people and boats and much appreciated food and drink, including cupcakes particularly appreciated by Jane Schmidt and Rich Parolski, amongst others.

Hopefully see you all at the CRYC Annual Regatta July 28th-29th, when we expect to be sailing out in the open water of the Chester River.

2012 Sunshine Open Results
April 26th, 2012 11:23 pm by

Severn Sailing Association’s Sunshine Open saw plenty of Sunshine on Saturday with 10-12 knots of wind out of the south and temperatures in the 70′s.  Unfortunately Sunday was anything but Sunny with rain and chilly conditions.  25 boats sailed 4 races on Saturday and 3 on Sunday with boats from as far away as Fishing Bay Yacht Club to the South and Toms River Yacht Club to the North.  Steve Cofer hosted a great party and dinner Saturday night.

With 3 bullets on Sunday Luke Shingledecker (SSA) took the pole followed by Eric Reinker (SSA) and David Schoene (SSA).  In the radials it was Dorian Haldeman (SSA), Kim Couranz (SSA) and Sandy Westphal (SSA).

Hampton Roads Sailing: February 5

“Andrew is a hero,” said my son, Ian, as we packed up from a great day on the water Super Bowl Sunday. “I’ve never seen anyone try so hard for so long. He never gave up. I thought he was amazing”

I thought, “That’s my son talking.” Sometimes it isn’t the winner, the best, the fastest guy on the water who inspires us. It was Andrew, who has dedicated himself to becoming a better sailor and bringing the fun week after week. The circumstances were this: Sunday was blustery and cold, with about 13 knots gusting in out of the North. The air and water temperatures were chilly. Seven sailors showed up, and five were racing, all of the series favorites. A bit of rain in the forecast didn’t help the turnout.

And Andrew took a bath, early on, with a gust-induced death roll. He got stuck trying to get things sorted and get up, and then got cold. But he never gave up, and never gave in. And he kept a happy and cheery outlook even as he asked for a bit of assistance. The group cut the racing short to lend support and get the cold guy back to some onshore warmth. It was a good moment for Hampton Roads Sailing, when the camaraderie we have developed showed itself to be more important than the competition.

Oh yeah, and we got two races in. It was an interesting day with the wily Doug Keiler heading toward a day of domination. Doug was picking the shifts and getting the starts from early on. The results were as follow:

Place Sailor Race 1 Race 2 Total
1 Doug Keiler 2 1 3
2 Neil Ford 1 2 3
3 Mike Moore 5 3 8
4 Robert Suhay 4 4 8

2012 PRSA Hangover Regatta Results
January 2nd, 2012 9:13 am by

It was another great turnout for the Hangover 2012 edition. We had 29 boats on the water just shy of thirty. Thanks to all those who traveled to make it close to the thirty goal. The weather helped draw people out, with temps in the upper fifties and southerly wind 5-12 knots, can’t beat that for the first of January. The RC Nabeel, Cassie and Alex Jacobs friend set up a windward leeward gate course. The wind was not very shifty at all and a good start and boat speed were the key for the day. There was close sailing all over the course and there were many photo finishes.

The top overall spots were up for grabs till the last race. Mr. Consistency (aka Len Guenther) continued his form into 2012 with two three, two fours and five to end up in fifth for the day. Third and fourth overall was a tie and they tied in a race with Alex Jacob winning the tie break for third place and Erich Hesse in fourth place overall. RJ Bay from WRSC iced second overall by winning the last race. James Jacob was the most consistent with 9 points in five races and sailing on his rail at points.

Special thanks to Scott and Nabeel who helped me pull it together.

SSA Frostbite Results: December 11
December 20th, 2011 4:39 pm by

From the Standard winner Bryan Fishback:

I am not sure how it happen, but I am writing up the report from last Sunday’s Laser Frostbite. I am pretty sure that everyone that was ahead of me most of the day either had to go in early or came out late or they weren’t registered. You know who you are. That being said, I will not be able to impart any great gems of wisdom from what I really thought was just an OK day on my part. So we are left with the travel log version of the day’s event.

It was a bright and slightly cooler day than we have had for the previous two Sundays. The wind was 3 to 8 out of the NE and E and occasionally the N and SE. The race course was set mostly directly down wind from Greenberry Point, so the breeze would fill in alternately from the NE over the North Severn anchorage or E around the end of the point.

There was an unusually strong current flooding in the river that made going left without breeze hazardous. During the earlier races the right seemed to pay a little more than the left, but the key was looking upwind and staying in the small circles of wind as they came down the course. Later, the left was more consistently better than the right, but only when there was enough breeze to overcome the current. I most always lost boats down wind, so that’s all I am going to say about that. The last upwind leg was were I was able to gain most consistently.

It can be a matter of luck how you round the bottom mark and whether you have a lane or not, but after the crap house downwind legs I was having, I made sure that I had a tight rounding and had the option of tacking right way. This seemed to work often, because the left had a bit more breeze and the current was not as strong at the bottom of the course.

From the Radial winner John Zseleczky:

The wind forecast was marginal but this turned out to be a really fun light air sailing day; we were always moving and there were always surprises … a miniature golf type of sailing day. The wind not only shifted back and forth but was patchy and you had to get to where the wind was or be left behind. In the earlier races the right side sometime paid off when sailing the first and final windward legs but as the day wore on the left side almost always had more wind and it was worth suffering through headers to get there. It took me a few races to change my mindset and get to the left but once I did those legs went better. A few times I found myself on a port lift winding up the course. This was nerve wracking knowing a final tack was needed but usually the wind went back and all was well. Other times there were quick, brief shifts that you had to tack on and stair-step up the course or be left behind by someone more aggressive.

On a memorable finish leg I tacked four times on Reid Beigel, felt like a mean old man and tacked off to cover the other (wrong) side. Reid went off to the left on starboard to sail in more air to finish well ahead. I learned from that and got to do the same to him on a later race.

Downwind, finding and staying in puffs seemed very important. Sandy and Dorian sailed by me a few times in some mystery puffs that I couldn’t find. The finish leg offered lots of opportunities to get back from poor downwind legs though, by tacking immediately after the leeward mark and getting to the windier left side of the course. As the finish line approached it was always nice to be on starboard when other boats were coming in from the left.

Thanks again to our race committee!

PRSA Frostbite Day 2: November 27
December 12th, 2011 12:54 pm by

It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Did you ever wonder what a NWS forecast of 7-9 knots with gusts to 20 kts would look like? If you sailed this Sunday – now you know. There was plenty of opportunity to go for a swim, which of course several PRYSA sailors couldn’t resist. Wind recordings at the airport topped out at 21 kts gusts with sustained winds of 15 kts during the time period of 1 of our races. Thank you to Marc and Jacob for serving as RC.

Eighteen boats and 20 sailors were on the Potomac enjoying the mild temperatures. The Boltons and the Jacobs made it a family affair taking turns on their Lasers and helping on RC. The wide variations in the wind made for some very crowded mark roundings. As the day progressed I heard more conversations at or before the zone establishing the overlaps – this is of course a very good thing.

A couple of items come to mind as best practices from Sunday: When the air was light watching the wind lanes going down wind seemed more important than getting to the shore to avoid current. Steve seemed to do just fine keeping clear air on the channel side. We had a very unusual wind to sail in, so shifting gears when the wind came up and down and then back up again was a big deal. I also enjoyed watching Alex Jacobs tack and jibe his boat. I had age and skill envy watching him use the hull to carve his roundings. – Len Guenther
